Alena Peschek is a multi disciplinary artist who deals with themes linked to the idea of ‘exploded emotions’. This feeling of vulnerability and lack of control of the self is portrayed in the works on display. The pieces are deeply personal and she describes them as a ‘response to the sometimes hard to take realities of the world we live in today. The work is expressive through its hyper vivid colour palettes and daydream like imagery. A constant theme is the cycle of life and the struggle to survive. Repeated throughout the imagery, whether through her weaving works or pen paintings are characters that are frail, deformed, mutilated and entwined abstractly with other character forms. Animals are another feature within the work; their symbolism seems akin to ancient Egyptian painting where the presence of animal imagery could be used to represent particular types of energy and strength or weakness.
